Learn how to Fly a Beech 18

— For English version see below —

Grenchen – Schweiz, 2014.

Grenchen, Switzerland 2014. This film shows how engineer Fritz Locher pilots the Beech 18 under the instruction of flight instructor and expert Taigh Ramey. It is the first flight after the annual inspection. During the flight a controlled shutdown of both engines, one after the other, is performed. During this, the propellers go into feather position to cause the least drag.

Taigh Ramey visited Switzerland every year. On the one hand because of the annual inspection of the aircraft, and on the other hand, check flights with the pilots were often carried out during this time. I had several interesting conversations with Taigh, be it about the history, the technology or the piloting of the Beech 18. It has always been very important to Taigh that as a pilot you should have a good technical understanding of the aircraft and as a mechanic you should be able to manoeuvre the aircraft in an emergency.
An example: It can happen that the landing gear is not retracted properly. It may be retracted, but it is not locked. Or it may not be retracted even though the landing gear lever has been operated correctly. With a trained technical understanding, however, even in such a situation there are several ways to verify that the landing gear is correctly retracted and locked. If not, it can still be extended and locked manually, i.e. by hand – but this requires practice.
I have also seen another, (French) Beech 18 at an airshow, where the cover panel between the two pilot seats was covered with a carpet. In this case it does not allow a view of the claw coupling to check if the landing gear is correctly locked after manual retraction. In the worst case this leads to a crash landing. A higher technical understanding therefore contributes significantly to safety.
